Allen wins opening FINA 10km World Cup

Tom Allen has won gold at the opening meet of the 2014 FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup in Patagones-Viedma, Argentina.

In a tight race that saw the top three separated by under five seconds, Allen took victory with a time of 1:51:29.04, claiming the scalps of both world champion Spyridon Gianniotis and world and Olympic silver medallist Thomas Lurz.

Allen's British teammates Jack Burnell (1:51:48.02) and Daniel Fogg (2:01:14.10) finished 17th and 26th respectively.

In the women’s race Alice Dearing was the top British finisher setting 2:16:24.70 for 21st place. Rachel Williams (2:18:01.10) was 23rd and Ellena Jones (2:18:24.10) was 24th. Danielle Huskisson did not finish the race. 

The next meet on the 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup circuit is Manzanillo, Mexico, on 5 April.
