Britain’s swimmers will go head-to-head for the right to represent their country at the Rio 2016 Games when they converge on Glasgow for the Olympic trials in April next year.
The British Swimming Championships 2016 will be held at Tollcross International Swimming Centre from 12-17 April where performances will determine the make-up of the team bound for Rio.
The announcement coincides with this week’s year-to-go anniversary until the start of the Games and British Swimming National Performance Director Chris Spice is looking forward to returning to Glasgow where qualification will be determined.
“Glasgow and Tollcross is a great choice on the back of an inspirational Commonwealth Games last year,” said Spice.
“It’s a perfect pick for us. The refurbished pool is like a new facility and as a sport we enjoy going there as the venue, supporters and city look after us very well.
“The athletes and coaches are looking forward to the public packing the venue once again and getting behind them at the most important national championships of the four-year cycle.”
The venue was the scene of Ross Murdoch’s proudest career moment to date when he won the Commonwealth Games 200m Breaststroke last summer and the Stirling-based swimmer is excited about the prospects for 2016.
“For me it’s going to bring back lots of great memories as I came up through the ranks at the pool and then experienced the amazing atmosphere it provided at the Commonwealth Games,” said Murdoch.
“I know it’s a great pool and I expect the swimmers will be supported by a passionate crowd who love their swimming. It’s a world class facility which will help the swimmers pursue their Olympic goals.”
Glasgow is excited to be bringing the Olympic trials to the city as it offers another opportunity to witness world class sport and follows on from the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and IPC Swimming World Championships in 2015.
