The home nation athletes delivered a strong set of heats performances at the opening session of the 21st Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast.
With more than 40 home nation final and semi-final swims secured the first sold out finals session under the floodlights of the Optus Aquatics Centre is set to be an exciting one.
The Women’s 400m Individual Medley kicked off the action in the pool with Scotland’s Hannah Miley topping the rankings after a comfortable swim, she leads the field out in lane four.
England’s Aimee Willmott and Abbie Wood will also be back in action to contest the medley medals over eight laps of the pool.
It was bronze for James Guy of England in 2014, he will be looking to improve on that in the final of the Men’s 400m Freestyle. Joining him to race for a place on the podium will be Stephen Milne (Scotland) and Daniel Jervis (Wales).
The Women’s 200m Freestyle final will see three British athletes take to the water, Holly Hibbott and Eleanor Faulkner line up behind the blocks for Team England and Lucy Hope for Team Scotland.
Team England’s Tom Hamer is back in Commonwealth Games action, four years ago in Glasgow he took silver, he’ll be looking to go one better in the Men’s S14 200m Freestyle final.
Welsh para-swimmers Jack Thomas and Alex Rosser join Hamer in the Gold Coast 2018 final.
Women’s S6 50m Butterfly Paralympic Champion Ellie Robinson made her Commonwealth Games debut overnight and she will be looking to replicate her Rio 2016 performance as she takes the centre lane in the Women’s 50m Butterfly Final.
With home nation swimmers completing more than 50% of the Men’s 200m Breaststroke Final line-up it’s set to be an exciting showdown for the Commonwealth title.
Ross Murdoch (Scotland) will be looking to defend his title from four years ago and after a swim strong morning that topped the heats rankings, he’s straight into lane four for the final.
Calum Tait and Craig Benson complete the Scottish contingent in the 200m breast with England’s James Wilby and Andrew Wills in lanes three and six respectively.
The Women’s 4x100m Freestyle relay will bring the day one swimming finals to a close and the only home nation represented will be Team England.
The Men’s 50m Butterfly semi-finals will see four home nation athletes in action, Games debutant Jacob Peters will be the only Team England athlete following Ben Proud’s disqualification.
Scott McLay and Sean Campsie will be flying the flag for Scotland and Northern Ireland’s Calum Bain completes the home nation representation.
Six athletes from four nations continue to demonstrate great strength and depth amongst British female breaststroke. Chloe Tutton (Wales), Laura Kinley (Isle of Man) and Molly Renshaw (England) will take to the water in semi-final one.
Scotland’s Corrie Scott and England’s Jocelyn Ulyett join Sarah Vasey (England) who leads the charge in lane four of semi-final two.
In the Men’s 100m Backstroke seven British athletes secured themselves semi-finals berths. Team England will be represented by Elliot Clogg and Luke Greenbank. Scotland has Craig McNally vying for a finals spot and Wales have Xavier Castelli.
Racing for Northern Ireland in the 100m backstroke semi-finals is Conor Ferguson, Tomas Hollingsworth will compete for Guernsey and Harry Shalamon for Jersey.
Rounding off the semi-finals action on the opening day of the swimming competition down under is the Women’s 100m Butterfly.
Team Wales are out in force with Alys Thomas, Harriet Jones and Harriet West returning for a second swim and hoping to make the Commonwealth Games final tomorrow.
Budapest 2017 World Championship finalist Charlotte Atkinson will line-up for the Isle of Man. Keanna Macinnes joins the line-up for Scotland and Team England have Emily Large and Laura Stephens, all three making Commonwealth Games debuts on the Gold Coast.
