Ciara Gibson-Byrne was named GBR’s top goalscorer as the team lost 5-8 to France in their final match of the LEN European Water Polo Championships in Budapest.
Playing in torrential rain, Gibson-Byrne opened the scoring with a penalty in the first minute of play before France pulled ahead and opened up a two goal lead.
In an end-to-end second quarter a determined British team came out on top winning 2-1 with goals from Angie Winstanley-Smith and a second for Gibson-Byrne.
However they were unable to continue the comeback in a frustrating third quarter which saw three shots hit the post.
In the final quarter the GBR team continued to make the French Goalkeeper, Lou Counil, work hard with eight shots on target before Gibson-Byrne scored her tenth of the tournament.
Unfortunately this wasn’t enough to give the British team victory and the final score was 5-8 (1-3, 2-1, 1-3, 1-1) to France.
